Hi, I'm JYN (it's an acronym pronounced [jin]) Star. I have been interested in the occult (hidden) sciences since I was a teenager. Perpetually seeking out texts on tarot, myth, and magic, slowly I began to weave the occult into my daily practices...beginning an in depth study of the Tarot and its structure, reading for myself, family, and friends. I purchased my first deck at 16, it was the Osho Zen Tarot. However, because its system varies a bit from the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith system, which is the most popular deck published today and is alluded to by almost all other decks, I would say that this set of cards is not the best starting point for the novice reader despite it having found me first.
Buying your first deck of cards goes directly against a myth that circulates in the Tarot world, stating that one should never purchase their first Tarot deck, but instead it should be gifted to them. Nevertheless, I started out with a purchased deck and its companion book, and began reading for friends, family, and myself. Tarot had officially become one of my many hobbies, and I pursued this passion in my free time whenever possible.
In my daily life, I transitioned out of high school and into college at Penn State (the University Park campus), and enjoyed a four year college life, where I studied psychology, finally settling into a program in Human Development. After earning a B.S., I transitioned into a career in social services where I worked as a Family Advocate at a Head Start program for three years. While there, I also attended Montclair State University full-time earning my Master's in Education, followed by a stint as a student teacher, after which I worked for a prominent New York City charter school in Harlem.
Meanwhile, I continued to study and grow spiritually by dabbling in things like yoga, meditation, Tarot, Astrology, natural magic, and delving into the world of myth, folklore, and fairy tales. I moved away from teaching, and entered into an introspective five year period, where I withdrew from the traditional workforce to study, research, blog, and write. I formed my brand and blog Nereids' Enchantments, began writing a series of novels, and started to really focus on symbolism, the collective unconscious, the archetypes of myth, and how they have been reinforced throughout literature and art time and again.
